Where form has a function

Deriving inspiration from nature and cultural memory, the building form twists and weaves through land and time, powerful yet restrained, asserting presence through flow rather than force. This is architecture that does not seek permission from the land, because it recognises itself as part of it – a continuation of contour, a solid made fluid, an emergence where Country and form are no longer separate, but indivisible. It comes into being through layering and response, a transition from ground to form, where building and landscape ultimately resolve as one.

The design intent of this luxurious residence is a thoughtful synthesis of traditional architecture and avant-garde innovation, weaving together a narrative that speaks to the continuum of time. Drawing inspiration from the Art Deco movement, the architectural story unfolds with a captivating interplay of form, materiality, and lighting, creating a harmonious coexistence of the past, present and the future.

Tucked away amidst the sprawling wilderness, this contemporary prodigy exudes an air of mystery – reminiscent of a Bond villain’s secret lair perched on the top of a hill. Its sleek, curved design seamlessly merges with the undulating terrain, whilst providing protection and seclusion. Beneath its elegant exterior lies a realm of modern opulence. Boasting sophisticated amenities, whilst bestowing pleasures to savour the charming vista while indulging in a perfectly shaken martini.

Anchored within Brigadoon’s undulating terrain, The House on the Hill resists the ordinary through a quiet yet deliberate assertion of presence. Poised between landscape and sky, its silhouette reads against the sweeping panorama of the Perth city skyline as a restrained emblem of architectural clarity. Informed by the sinuous rhythm of the native millipede, the form folds and extends through a sequence of measured gestures, fusing structure and inhabitation into one continuous motion. Precisely oriented, the architecture is drawn instinctively toward light, tracing a calibrated dialogue, where landscape, horizon, and inhabitation resolve as one, continuous and quietly monumental.

Deep in the bushland of Yallingup a conversation takes place between the natural environment and the built form. The building disguises itself by mimicking two tree branches crossing one another, charred and burnt – highlighting the harshness of bushfires to the area. Its distinct form and dark materiality helps to juxtapose against the organic contours and vibrant colours of the landscape that it is encapsulated within. Its placement maintains a level of sensitivity to its natural surroundings by embedding into the landscape – serving an experiential duality of connection at the lower ground level and higher tree line.

Inspiration was drawn from a kinetic model where a ball travels along a path propelled by its own gravity. This can be seen in a plethora of scenarios in our daily lives, as objects bounce around finding their own organic course back down to the earth.

Nestled harmoniously and congruently amongst the coconut palm trees, and the crystal blue ocean on the relaxed sun-soaked shores of Gili Air; an abstract adaptation takes place between the classic cabana vernacular, and the traditional island bungalow.
