Under Development
Deriving inspiration from nature and cultural memory, the building form twists and weaves through land and time, powerful yet restrained, asserting presence through flow rather than force. This is architecture that does not seek permission from the land, because it recognises itself as part of it - a continuation of contour, a solid made fluid, an emergence where Country and form are no longer separate, but indivisible. It comes into being through layering and response, a transition from ground to form, where building and landscape ultimately resolve as one.
This project is an act of emergence. Not as a singular gesture, but as a gradual unfolding, where form, land, memory, and occupation resolve together into something coherent and inseparable. Located in West Swan, the site sits elevated, falling gently toward a central dam that anchors the property both physically and emotionally. From this still body of water, a small creek meanders through dense trees, tracing its way toward the Swan River beyond. The landscape does not present itself as a backdrop, but as an active participant in shaping the architecture.
The land here carries deeper resonance. In Noongar telling, the Wagyl moved through this terrain, folding earth into curves and hollows, leaving behind a rhythm that still reads in the contours today. The architecture responds not by imitation, but by alignment. Strong yet restrained, the form twists and weaves through the existing natural and built tapestry, asserting presence through flow rather than force. Like the Wagyl, it moves with intent, adapting, curving, and emerging where required.
The existing house is retained and carefully reinterpreted, allowing its history to remain legible. A new outer skin draws it into a shared architectural language, while the former courtyard is enclosed to form a formal entry foyer, creating a moment of pause before the house opens outward again. Large windows to the existing wing transform the original fabric into a curated exhibit, its walls clad in the same external façade material, preserved and revealed like a museum artefact. This language is deliberately echoed within the new addition, creating a deliberate dialogue between past and present.
The extension expands and elevates itself above the existing pool, curving gently toward the dam as the gravitational centre of the site. Its orientation shelters the house from prevailing winds, with vertical fins subtly modulating exposure and movement. From the dominant form, quieter extrusions emerge, creating moments of delight where rooms open fully to 180-degree views, dissolving the boundary between inside and out and giving the occupant a sense of suspension above the landscape.
Internally, the house is organised around a clear central spine that establishes both orientation and calm, allowing spaces to unfold fluidly while maintaining uninterrupted connections to landscape. Living, dining, and gathering zones are layered rather than segmented, creating a natural progression through the home without reliance on corridors. Subtle shifts in level, ceiling height, and light define moments of intimacy and expansion. Circulation is intuitive and measured, encouraging movement that feels guided rather than prescribed, where spatial transitions occur quietly.
The formal sitting room is defined by a layered relationship to light, with a skylight above and a moon hole below, drawing views and illumination through multiple planes. Nearby, the formal dining space is conceived with the intimacy of a chef’s table, private yet still deeply connected to the architecture and outlook. The external pool deck and bar mirror the internal floor plate, creating interlocking planes aligned to the dam, reinforcing a layered architectural rhythm.
The master bedroom is conceived as a secluded retreat, elevated above the landscape, with a private floating sunroom extending outward for quiet morning reflection. A discreet office and bar complete the suite, forming a layered environment where work, pause, and evening ritual coexist in a calm, private setting. Nearby, the health wing unfolds as a private resort enclave. The gym emerges and opens itself to the outdoors, while a new structure extends overhead to provide shelter and shade to the pool edge, establishing a calm, hotel-like atmosphere where movement between water, wellness, and landscape feels seamless.
A restrained, earthy interior palette grounds the experience, allowing the landscape to remain dominant, grounding the architecture in its setting. Read as a whole, the architecture does not announce itself as an object, it recognises itself as part of the land, emerging slowly, meaningfully, and inevitably from it.
