Mainstream ideology has seen a shift in functional modernism; where form follows function resulting in an elevated collection of bricks and mortar, a standalone object detached from site and devoid of meaning. DGK Architects recognises that the built form is a 3-dimensional medium where form has a function. It is a platform to engage with the human realm, an opportunity to discover a deeper beginning in the experience of time, space, light and materials.  The phenomena of the space of a room, the sunlight and shadow filtering through a window, and the colour and reflection of materials on a wall and floor all have integral relationships and communicate through resonance and dissonance, just as instruments in a musical composition.

‘Space’ and ‘Place’ have been used synonymously to give meaning to a design intervention. However, there is a ‘third space’ that reveals itself where these layers combine and overlap. It is the space between buildings that is the glue that binds the built fabric to its setting, a threshold of transition where subjective feelings are created based on the everyday experiences and wider social relations. This is where DGK Architects draws its inspiration from. We believe in anchoring each project in its specific site, expressing the local urban dialogue that is conveyed within its fabric, bringing forth contextual sensitivity.

The outcome is an architectural narrative – sculptures sensitively placed within the landscape. Habitual art forms that are carefully crafted and detailed that engage with the natural and the biological realm designed to heighten the human sensory experience. Celebrating the assemblage of materials and communicating the poetics of light, space and shadow producing thought provoking qualities that redefine the experience of a ‘sense of place’.
