Designed for those who appreciate a practical, yet sophisticated and stylish execution. Transformed into perfect spaces to entertain, while retaining intimate sanctuaries for the owner to relax and pamper themselves, this home appeals to whatever might suit your palette for the day.

When building on a rear lot, it often lends itself to a home design that follows an 'L' shape typology, with heavily paved areas surrounded by solid blank walls, which can feel relatively closed in.

However, at DGK Architects, we like to view things a little left of centre. A rear block has a beauty within itself that is often overlooked. For instance, a rear location allows a residence to have heightened privacy and quietness that street frontages can sometimes lack.

The threshold between the street and driveway down to the residence can have a grandeur, and estate type feel. We embellished on this line of thought by incorporating a sophisticated material palette and hanging planter beds to the garage that aids in creating a calm and soothing environment when entering the residence. In addition, these rear blocks have a small 'window' in which the house is visible from the street, but on the reverse, it serves as the focal point of the residence that provides a level of surveillance back to the street.

At this corner, a 'corner-box' was created to literally express the 'corner' of the home. Its contrast in materiality and slimline portal windows draws your eye to this physical form, as the beacon to the home.

As the client was a chef, the brief for this house centred around the kitchen, living and entertainment areas, which featured large open plan living that blurred the boundaries between the inside and outside, boasting an open kitchen and other amenities such as a walk-in cool room and pantry, along with a bar, wine cellar and a dry store. This home provides a luxurious open flow, opulent finishes, and fluid cohesion between the spaces that give this small rear block home a grandness and larger than life feel.
